C U LT U R E E X P E R I E N C E S I N W E S T S W E D E N 42 The Göteborgs Opera The Göteborgs Opera opened in 1994 with a performance of the Swedish opera Aniara, thereby taking over Stora Teatern’s role as Gothenburg’s premier venue for opera, dance and musical theatre. Over the course of its 25-year history, the Göteborgs Opera has made a reputation for itself as one of Northern Europe’s most outstanding opera houses. World-famous soprano Nina Stemme had her début here and often returns to Gothenburg’s opera house by the river. HIT PRODUCTIONS HOSTED BY THE GÖTEBORGS OPERA OPERA – 2001: Bizets ”Carmen”: 39 082 visitors at 36 performances. DANCE – 2015: In a production of Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird, timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of its première. MUSICAL – 1995/96: Andersson, Ulvaeus & Rudolfsson’s Kristina från Duvemåla: 170,053 visitors at 125 performances. The Gothenburg Concert Hall Opened in 1935, the Gothenburg Concert Hall is located at Götaplatsen. Its Stora Salen concert hall, which can seat an audience of 1,400, is world-renowned for its excellent acoustics. Visitors can enjoy performances by the National Orchestra of Sweden. MAJOR PUBLIC CONCERTS BY THE GOTHENBURG SYMPHONY 2006: Opening of the European Athletics Championships at Götaplatsen, with guest performances by Swedish singer Peter Jöback and other artists, in front of a crowd of 100,000 visitors. 2014: Concert by Swedish artist Laleh, playing to an audience of 40,000 at Götaplatsen, Gothenburg Culture Festival. Stora Teatern Gothenburg’s Stora Teatern theatre was opened in 1859 and served as the city’s premier venue for opera, operetta, ballet and musical theatre performances until 1994. Although the theatre building fell into disuse after the Göteborg Opera was opened, it re-opened to the delight of many in 2011, and now strives to make a name for itself as the Nordic region’s top venue for guest performances by performing arts troupes, musicians and more.
