If you want to know more, you are welcome to visit the Vänern Museum's new exhibition on the city's history. Guide to the history of Lidköping 1926 – The start of the porcelain era The Rörstrand porcelain factory moved to Lidköping in 1926 and merged with AB Lidköpings porslinsfabrik (ALP). In 1955 the factory had a workforce of 1400, and it remained a large local employer up until 2006 when production was shut down. Today porcelain production is once again taking place and res- taurants and shops sit alongside the Rörstrand Museum. 1446 – Lidköping was granted its town charter On 17 June the Old Town, east of the river Lidan, was granted its town charter by King Christopher of Bavaria. It became the first town on the shores of Lake Vänern, and in mediaeval times the dominant industries were trade, handicrafts and shipping. 1470 – The market in the squa- re was established On 10 April, King Karl Knutsson gave his permission for Lidkö- ping to hold a weekly market every Saturday – a tradition that lives on to this day! In the 20th century, a Wednesday market was also established. 1672 – The new town Count of Läckö, Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie began building what became known as the ‘new’ town, west of the river Lidan, in line with the geometric town plan established by the count himself. 1672 - Town hall relocated to Lidköping Once the ‘new’ town had been constructed, the count’s hunting lodge from Kållandsö was relocated to the town square to serve as a town hall. After having also served as both a fire station and police station, the building is now home to the tourist office and a café. 1849 – Destroyed by fire The majority of the Old Town, with its mediaeval network of streets, was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1849. All that remains is Limtorget, where the oldest building was probably constructed in the 1690s.
