We welcome you to our island,
to Kållandsö
The Kållandsö Island Association was formed a few years ago specifically
to develop sustainable tourism and to create the possibilities for more people
to live and work on the island. The island’s resources must constantly be cared
for, something best done by permanent residents who see the needs and the
measures required.
There are many ancient monuments here from the long history of this
coastal farming countryside. Among them are the many coastal cairns, the
unique bronze shields discovered at Fröslunda, the medieval fortifications at
Jarlehus, Läckö Castle itself and the pilgrim way from Skara over Lurö Island
into Värmland Province.
That the area was important in ancient times was due to its strategic,
marine location where the best communications lay. There are still many
small, medieval parishes complete with churches, small villages, remains of
old fortifications and preserved estates. The churches and villages command
the heights of the rolling countryside. The low fields were once marshy water
meadows until they were drained during the 1800s for tilling and building.
The Kålland nature reminds the visitor of Bohuslän’s west coast island nature.
The countryside is like a patchwork that varies between fertile clay areas and
softly rounded rock faces dressed with oaks and junipers. North of Kållandsö
Island the Eken and Lurö archipelagos share these natural forms, though the
clay between the rock faces are replaced by water.
Lurö – “the soul’s Garden of Eden”
Beyond the furthest islets of the Eken archipelago and northwards over the
Ekefjorden Bay lies the Lurö archipelago, a string of pearls that separates the
Dalbo and Värmland Seas. Those wishing to stay awhile on Lurö Island can find
accommodations at the Luringen Inn with ten overnight choices in varied style
an old Lake Vänern lighthouse, a genuine fishing shed or an actual sailing
fishing boat.
HIKING ON KÅLLANDSÖ ISLAND
Most people reach our island by car, bus or boat. But the lovely nature is made
for walking and for discovering things that might be missed from the road or
the waterway. One such lost pearl are the excellent hiking trails near Läckö,
between Läckö and Spiken and in the old forest near the fishing hamlet. Bring
your own picnic basket or stop off at one of our restaurants or cafes. And while
you are on the path, be careful with nature and enjoy your time on Kållandsö.
As of 2006 there is a new working party in the Kållandsö Island Association
charged with suggesting hiking and cycling trails on the island. Some shorter
ones might be in use by the summer 2008. Canoeing and overnight lean-tos
are also part of the plans.
