LÄCKÖ SKANS
The Läckö Redoubt is a fortification built as defence
against an expected attack by Danish and Norwegian troops. Built in 1676 by
Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, the area is now a nature reserve.
DJURGÅRDSUDDE
along the nearby nature reserve Torsängen,
together create a 7 hectare park-like area. A scenic and hilly recreational
area near the shore of the lake Vänern at the crossing to Kållandsö.
Close to the water there is a fairly large population of old oaks. The largest
oak of Västergötland, the only one measuring over 28 feet in diameter, is
growing near by the road at the borderline of Djurgårdsudde and Tors-
ängen. At Djurgårdsudde you will find a café.
KÅLLANDSÖ HEMBYGDSGÅRD
The Kållandsö Homestead Museum
is located near the Otterstad Church. The collection includes a traditional
cottage open to the roof, a tool shed, cow barn and a more recent, timbered
house. The island’s last windmill stands firmly on the rock near the road. There is a
supply and exhibition hall on the area where interested persons can study parts
of the collections, in all totalling more than 1 000 artefacts.
Otterstad Church
This church was raised in 1854 using building
material from St. Katarinae Chapel, Senäte medieval church and the old Otter-
stad Church, all torn down to build the new one. The baptismal font was moved
from the old Senäte Church, as well as one of the three church bells. Three
gravestones from the old church are inserted in the tower floor.
Otterstad medieval church site
The old Otterstad Church stood
around 700 metres from today’s edifice. Probably built in the early 1200s, it was
torn down 1854 when the new church was built. Today the only remnants are a
few simple gravestones.
LÄCKÖ STRAND
This youth hostel and pension lies on the eastern shore
of Kållandsö.
Läckö Castle
This the most popular tourist goal in western Sweden
offers a 700-year history, many exhibitions, a Middle Ages Market, activities for
children, an opera and a host of events that include castle concerts and thea-
tre performances.
Medieval Läckö Castle is best known as the storied De la Gardie Palace on the
shores of Lake Vänern. Brynolf Algotsson, Bishop of Skara, laid the foundation for
a fortification here in 1298, probably comprising no more than a few buildings
inside a redoubt. The location was strategically located near the centre of that
day’s Skara diocese. After a fire in the 1470s, Bishop Brynolf Gerlachsson
expanded the castle.
With the reformation, the crown and King Gustav Vasa confiscated the site
and the castle fell into disrepair. In 1571, Baron Hogenskild Bielke was given the
castle as a fief and began a series of renovations that included beautification
