Pontusson De la Gardie took over the enfeoffment in 1615 – he expanded and
changed the structures, including a third-storey addition to the main building.
Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie was only 30-years old when he took over
the castle and the earldom. In 1654 he started comprehensive building works

building and a number of artist-decorated walls and ceilings. It is mostly his
castle we see today, even if the Middle Ages are well represented.
