Where Brakelund's ridge breaks the
plains was probably once a village. The well
preserved ruins gives a good example of what
burial grounds looked like during the Iron Ages.
Remains include various stone circles indicating
a burial site of an important person.

the fire in the
old town 1849

Limtorget is all that remains of Lidköping's
medieval town plan. In May of
1849
a fire
began in the Lidbeck barn destroying all the
old town structures with the exception of the
priest's residence, a few isolated houses and a
small farm estate called Levanderska gården.

Backgården is a family run farm, dating back to
the
1600
s, located in the small village of Lavad.
This farm includes two museums displaying a
variety of old farm and household items, nostal-
gic needle craft designs and dolls. Visiting hours

A museum of the Swedish Air force Base and
the surrounding farm area. One building is used
to demonstrate military preparation activities.
The facility is located outside the base gates.

gamla rådhuset
(60-c4)
Originally a hunting lodge that Magnus Gabriel
De la Gardie built in Kålland and later moved to
Lidköping's square and used as the town hall. In
1960
a fire destroyed the top floor. This restored
building currently houses a bakery and the local
tourist bureau.

grevehuset
(60-c4)
One of Lidköping's oldest structures. It is said
that King Karl XII was shot and killed using
a lead button stolen from his own uniform
during the siege at Fredrick fortress in Norway.
The King's body laid in Grevehuset for two days
prior to returning to Stockholm.

gunnar wennerberg
(60-c5)
A statue of Gunnar Wennerberg is
erected along the river bank in Lidköping. Born
in
1817
on a priest estate known today as Wen-
nerberg Farm. Gunnar was a county governor,
representative, lecturer and musical composer,
most known for the song he composed, “Här är
gudagott att vara”.

A crafts centre at Limtorget built after the fire
of
1849
become the most popular in town. The
facility, including the old black smith shop, is
owned and operated by Lidköping's building
association. Events are held on Wed evenings
from mid June to mid August.

idrottsmuseum
(60-c5)
Lidköping's athletic museum, inside Kylander's
school, located on the town park grounds,
displays the towns athletic history along with
photographs, trophies, and profiles of local
athletic clubs. Open weekdays from
9-13.

jarlehus borg
(63-e3)
A castle predominately placed high up on a
cape in Lake Vänern was the strategic entrance
to the important medieval channel between
Dalbo Lake and Kinne Bay. The castle was con-
structed in the
1930
's and burnt down in the
1400
's. Traces of the remaining moat are visible.

kylanderskolan

Built after a donation by pharmacist Kylander,
this school was designed by one of Sweden's
most famous architects, Helgo Zetterval of Lid-
köping. Today this former elementary school is
used as the town's music school, athletic muse-
um and rug weaving cottage.

Located in the village of Lavad along highway

you will see a plethora of tractors, vintage
motorbikes, kerosene engines and equipment
that are on display from May to September.

In
1446
this famous medieval market place was
granted state privileges by Kristoffer of Bayern.
In
1670
the Count of Läcko, Magnus Gabriel De
la Gardie began construction of the new town
square. The river Lidan divides the new and old
town squares.

The streets of Limtorget date back to the
1500
's
but only a few structures built prior to the
1800
s
remain. Today many artists and craftsmen use
these picturesque houses as studios. One will
also find the old printing house in this area.
